MILDURA DAY  31 May

“The Mildura Day anniversary celebrates one of the more important days in our local modern history…”
– Chaffey Trail Reference Group Chairman & Mildura Rural City Councillor, Mark Eckel

On 31 May 1887 the Chaffey Brothers, the Victorian Government and the Queen signed an Indenture formalising Mildura as Australia’s first irrigation colony.

Each year on the anniversary of the indenture signing, we celebrate what we now call “Mildura Day”.

The Chaffey Trail Reference Group look at one significant aspect of our modern history, thanks to the Chaffey brothers and encourage all to join us in celebrating that important milestone.
With a variety of activities for all ages, there is always something for everyone.

Come and discover Mildura and how it came to be all those years ago…

Further information about the Mildura Day Celebrations is available from the Mildura Visitor Information Centre on 1800 039 043 or (03) 5018 8380.

HISTORIC WALKING & DRIVING TOURS

On Mildura Day 31 May 2015, The Chaffey Trail Reference Group launched the Chaffey Trail Walking and Driving Tour Booklet. Not only does the booklet offer the opportunity for self guided tours around the Mildura region, it is filled with facts and knowledge of how this town and what you may see on the tour, came to be.

Just grab a copy and trace the story of how Mildura became an irrigated oasis in the midst of an arid land.

Here is an excerpt from the foreword of the guide by the Chaffey Trail reference group chairman, councillor Mark Eckel.

“It is opportune to have the historic drives and walks back in print under the banner of the Chaffey Trail. These first appeared in the 1990s and now have been combined and greatly expanded, some 25 years later.

The interest of the members of the Chaffey Trail Reference Group has been phenomenal and, since virtually everything historical in Mildura has a strong Chaffey link, they have taken the walks and drives under their wing…”
